Singing Tips

While many singers attribute their singing off-pitch (flat or sharp) to "having a tin ear", or being "tone deaf", the problems are usually fixable with some basic techniques.
This article is concerned with how to keep from singing flat, or under the desired pitch, but first I'm going to briefly address singing sharp (above the desired pitch). Notes tend to rise in pitch when we push too much air into the sound. (over-sing, "belt" or over-project.) If you use a microphone this is easy to fix...just sing closer to the mic or turn up the volume. If you sing in a large room without amplification you'd be wise to work with a good voice teacher, or with my course THE SINGER'S BIBLE. Regardless of how you do it, you need to stop pushing your voice.
Now, to the "inner smile". Singing flat is very often caused by not using enough energy. Notice I said "energy" not volume. These are not the same things. It takes just as much, if not more, energy to sing softly as to sing loudly. Otherwise soft singing becomes dull and lifeless.
Did you ever notice that when you smile you seem to fill up with positive energy. Your whole body perks up, your thoughts become bright and clear. I suggest that you learn to use smiling to tap into the energy it takes to sing on pitch, and keep your sound alive and vital.
Now, I'm not necessarily talking about a big toothy smile, but rather that smile we feel on the inside when we feel happy. It shows in our eyes, and shines from the inside. Practice singing with your "inner smile" and your pitch will improve, along with all other aspects of your performance.
Above all, learn to think ahead. Mentally "hear" what you are about to sing BEFORE you sing it. How do you do that? Simply by being aware that that's what you want to do. You don't speak without creating the thought in advance. Don't sing without creating the sound in advance.
